Choosing the Right Cleaning Solution

Keeping your bong clean is a task that is essential for a pleasant smoking experience and the longevity of the piece. There’s a variety of cleaning solutions available, each with its own unique advantages.

Isopropyl Alcohol 

Isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) is the most popular cleaning agent when trying to figure out how to clean your bong in a safe way. It’s highly effective at breaking down resin and grime, leaving your bong in a state that is clean and ready to use. Rinse out your bong with hot water and simply pour the Isopropyl alcohol into the top. Add some normal table salt to the mixture and shake. The salt acts as an abrasive, helping scrub away the hard to reach areas within the bong. Bamboo cleans the best when an abrasive is in the cleaning agent. The sheath of the bamboo is very soft making it easy for any kind of abrasive to remove the grime.  Rinse thoroughly with hot water and make sure to remove any extra rubbing alcohol before you begin consuming.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is another excellent cleaning agent for bongs. Like table salt, it provides an abrasive to help loosen up resin build up. Mix epsom salt with hot water and pour it into your bong. Let it soak for a decent amount of time before shaking so that the salt can break down any stuck on resin. For bongs that haven't been cleaned for a long time make sure to let it soak for as long as you possibly can. Bamboo opposed to glass works really well with epsom salt to remove grime.

Commercial Bong Cleaners

Many companies produce specialized bong cleaning solutions that are formulated to dissolve resin quickly. These cleaners often contain a combination of chemicals that are unknown and can be very toxic. 420 solution is one of the safest on the market because it does not have acetone as an active ingredient. Acetone is one of the primary bases for nail polish remover which can be very toxic if any residue is left behind.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

For those who prefer a more organic cleaning solution, vinegar and baking soda is a popular option. The acidic properties of vinegar help dissolve resin, while the baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive. Mix equal parts vinegar and hot water to dilute the vinegar. Vinegar can leave a very pungent smell in your bong if you do not dilute it beforehand. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and let it fizz away the grime. For this cleaning agent in particular make sure to rinse out thoroughly. Look at the inside of your bamboo bong to guarantee that no vinegar or baking soda residue is left behind to guarantee the longevity of your bamboo bong.
