A Guide to Cleaning Without Isopropyl Alcohol - Use Lemon Juice

Eco-Friendly Cleaning

A clean bong is not just aesthetically pleasing, but it also enhances the flavor of your bamboo while you are consuming. Over time, resin and grime build up in your bong, affecting the taste and functionality of your piece.  While there are many commercial bong cleaning solutions on the market, why not opt for an eco-friendly alternative that also helps you save money. Unlike isopropyl alcohol, lemon juice is 100% natural and won't leave any residue that could affect the taste or look of your bamboo bong.

Why Lemon Juice?

Lemon juice contains citric acid, a natural solvent that effectively dissolves resin and grime without the need for harsh chemicals. Lemon juice leaves behind a fresh and citrusy taste that will complement the smoke from whatever herb that you may be consuming.

Materials

  1. Lemon juice
  2. Warm water
  3. Salt
  4. Tape
  5. Plastic bag

Disassemble your bong

Before you begin cleaning, make sure you disassemble your bong into its individual parts. Place the bowl, downstem, and base to the side. This will make it easier to clean all of the hard to reach places.

Rinse With Warm Water

Start by rinsing each component of your bong with warm water. This will loosen any debris. Make sure the water isn’t too hot so that you don’t burn yourself.

Add Lemon Juice and Salt

Before you pour the lemon juice and salt into your bamboo bong tape the hole that your downstem is normally placed in. This will prevent any extra lemon juice leaking during the cleaning process. Add your lemon juice and salt. The salt acts as an abrasive. An abrasive is a material that uses its texture to remove tough materials like resin. The combination of using the citric acid that’s in the lemon juice and the salt will combine to remove anything that could affect the cleanliness of your bong.

Shake & Rinse

After your all natural cleaning agent has been concocted inside of the bamboo bong, pick it up and shake it with both of your hands. This step in the process is important because this alone will make sure that you remove all of the grime that is in your bamboo bong. Pour the lemon juice and salt cleaning agent into a bag. Place your downstem and bowl inside the bag. Shake until you can noticeably see that your downstem and bowl are as clean as possible.

Rinse your bamboo base, downstem, and Bowl with hot water. The biggest indication that your bong is clean and ready to use when you can no longer smell the lemon and salt. Normally in this step in the process you want to make sure any excess cleaning agent is removed because you could be exposed to harmful carcinogens when you’re consuming. When you’re cleaning with lemon juice that is not the case. If you like the smell and taste of lemon rinse as much as you need too but also still maintaining that citrus taste.
